Survivor: The good, the bad and the looniest
April 17, 2006

  By Sally Scott

  • Host Jeff Probst picked up his future wife, "the love of my life" Julie Berry, on Survivor Vanuatu. His secret vice is watching American Idol which he professes to loathe - but he still watches all the way through.

  • Osten Taylor (Survivor 2000) was the first contestant in Survivor history to voluntarily quit the game. Probst felt that Taylor was exaggerating health problems as a reason to quit. Probst snuffed Taylor's torch with the words: "Per your wishes, go home". The producers then refused to air Taylor's post-departure confession. Osten's claim was that he had six "staph" infections on his chest and legs, which had not healed. He also moaned about losing too much weight early on. Executive producer Mark Burnett commented: "Here's this big huge guy who could kill me outside the game and yet he cried about (the game) all the time."

  • Liar, liar, pants on fire: Jon Dalton (Pearly Islands) is memorable for his dodgy character, not the least for lying about his grandmother's death to win sympathy from the other tribe members and help win a reward challenge later on in the series. Dalton also turned up drunk at one tribal council ... so far Dalton is the least popular contestant as far as viewers are concerned, good old shaggy-haired Rupert (Boneham) was the most popular - even though he stole shoes from the rival team.

  • The only contestant to leave the game without being voted off was Michael Skupin who suffered severe burns when he had an accident around the camp fire . He was flown off the island and to hospital.

  • Jenna Morasca quit the All Stars season to be with her mother, who had breast cancer.

  • Susan Hawk quit All Stars citing emotional trauma after alleging that naked Richard Hatch had touched her. She should have kicked him in the proverbials. He seems to have got his just desserts after being arrested and jailed on two counts of tax evasion and submitting a false tax return. He is facing a few years behind bars.

  • Winner of most individual challenges: Colby Donaldson with nine.

  • Survivor IV was due to be filmed in Jordan, but the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, put an end to that.

  • In the first three seasons contestants were spoiled on day one, with basic food, water and some matches. From season IV they had to find everything themselves.

  • Looney Tunes did a parody of Survivor called Toon Marooned.
