I am gay, says Star Trek actor
October 29, 2005

Star Trek star George Takei - best known as Mr Sulu - has confessed he is gay.

The 68-year-old actor, who starred in three series of the cult sci-fi show and six Star Trek movies, has come out to Los Angeles gay magazine Frontiers.

Takei, who joined the long-running show in 1966, revealed he has been in a relationship with partner Brad Altman for 18 years.

The actor says he grew up feeling ashamed of his sexuality, but now feels confident that society will accept him
.

He told Associated Press: "The world has changed from when I was a young teen feeling ashamed for being gay. The issue of gay marriage is now a political issue. That would have been unthinkable when I was young."

Takei also explained his latest role, playing "very contained but
turbulently frustrated" psychologist in the play 'Equus', helped him make the decision to go public with his sexuality. - Bang Showbiz
