Matt Damon joined the police to prepare for new movie The Departed.
The Oscar-winning actor, who plays a mobster who infiltrates the police department as an informer, admits going on raids with Boston police wasn't his first brush with the law.
He joked: "Before this, all I knew of the police was limited to the times I'd been pulled over for speeding. So to get in there and really see what these guys do was great."
The 35-year-old even helped the police carry out a raid on a crack den as part of his research for the new Martin Scorsese film.
However, The Bourne Identity actor played down his part in the raid, insisting: "I didn't go in until they cleared the house and I was in the back with my bulletproof vest on.
"But I did get an idea of the violent and aggressive world my character is in."
Matt admitted he jumped at the chance to work on the epic Mafia thriller based in his hometown.
He revealed: "I was like, 'Martin Scorsese is directing a gangster film in Boston?' It's like the dream of all dreams. I didn't even try to be cool about it, I was like 'I'm in!'"
The Departed, which also stars Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio and was produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment, is based on the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs.
