Indian Film Academy Awards
June 22, 2009

By Varshan Sookhun

Lotus FM's Varshan Sookhun gives an overview of the recently held 10th International Indian Film Academy awards at the Cotai Arena Venetian Macau Resort in Macau …

The IIFA performers included:

  • Sonam Kapoor (performed a medley of songs from Saawariya and Delhi 6)

  • Jackky Bhagnani (Kal Kissne Dekha)

  • Bipasha Basu (Aa Dekhen Zara/Shut Up And Bounce),

  • Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi)

  • Govinda, Sushmita Sen and Riteish Deshmukh (Do Knot Disturb promotion)

  • Aishwarya Rai (Azeem O Shaan, Guru, Taal)

  • Abhishek Bachchan (Bluffmaster, Jaane Kyun, Maa Da Laadla and Desi Girl - the final act with Aishwarya in the audience)

    The hosts were:

  • Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh and Boman Irani.

    The best dressed:

  • Undoubtedly Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Lara Dutta, Arjun Rampal, Dia Mirza and Priyanka Chopra (in Desi Girl attire).

    On the flip side:

  • There was Kangana (Ranaut) looking like a bride in the buff white, Bipasha (Basu) wearing a costume out of a Tomb Raider movie, Anushka Sharma in what appeared to be nothing more than blue curtains and Sushmita Sen making a senseless tribute to the movie Black.

Best IIFA moment … and one for the history books:

  • Abhishek Bachchan carries his Dostana director Tarun Mansukhani onto the stage to receive the Best Comic Performance award. And Abhishek's joke about his relationship with his wife and his affair with John Abraham had the audience in stitches.

His speech got quite emotional when he thanked his and his wife's parents. By the way, Abhishek confirmed that Dostana 2 will be out by the next Indian summer.

    Forgettable IIFA moment:

  • Ashutosh Gowariker is known for his lengthy acceptance speeches at award functions. However, the words which regrettably hit the hardest was when he said: "Priyanka Chopra you're a brilliant actress. But why didn't Aishwarya Rai win the award for Jodhaa Akbar?"

Priyanka had just returned to her seat with the award.

    The bloopers:

  • Asin, Dino Morea, Zayed Khan, Aishwarya Rai and some others found themselves lost on the massive stage when making their way out and, to their embarrassment, ended up on the wrong side.

While Lara Dutta read out the sponsors' names from the tele-prompter, an oblivious security officer chose to stand right in front of the screen until she said: " I know you're doing your job but let me do mine too."
