If you are tired of the mainstream humdrum on the film circuit, do not despair as there are local outlets that show great independent films.
On Sunday (June 28) Coal Stove Pictures (16th Floor, Ten Sixty Six, Cnr Pritchard & Harrison, Marshalltown. Tel: 011 836 8911) will be screening three independent films from 6pm.
Back in 5 is about an aspiring screenwriter who learns of his twin's death. On his way home, he meets a charming American girl who is as lonely as he is. New Dawn Rising draws from last year's xenophobic riots, while Umnekethu Nomlotha (My Brother and the Ashes) tells the story of two brothers whose policeman father was necklaced during the height of the township violence.
Atlas Studios (33 Frost Avenue, Milpark, Joburg) has a traditional ritual of showing independent films every first Wednesday of the month. This Wednesday viewers will be treated to a 90-minute feature called Wholetrain. Directed by Florian Gaag, the German flick comes with English subtitles, and the plot revolves around a crew of four graffiti artists.
Call 011 482 7111 for more information.
On Saturday, July 4, The Alliance Française (17, Lower park Drive, corner Kerry Road, Parkview) will show The Secret Of The Grain, directed by the Franco-Tunisian Abdel Kechiche. The plot sees Slimane Beiji, a divorced head of a Franco-Arabic family, lose his job. He converts a dilapidated boat into a family restaurant specialising in his ex-wife's fish couscous. Call 011 646 1169 to RSVP.
Then comes Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action shows at House of Nsako (101 High Street, Brixton) at 6pm on Wednesday, July 8. Directed by the Canadian film-maker Velcrow Ripper - who will be present at the screening - the feature is a documentary about a spiritual quest.
