Best bunny chow website leaps off
|
July 2, 2009
By Barbara Cole
The search for the best bunny chow - that uniquely Durban delight - has begun in earnest.
And by the time the thousands of soccer fans descend on the city for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup, they will be spoilt for choice.
Deputy mayor Logie Naidoo, the self-proclaimed "bun-ny master" who reckons that there is no better meal, launched the first website dedicated to the quarter bunny during the Mr Price Pro surfing contest at Willard Beach, Ballito.
Naidoo teamed up with Chris Chappe, owner of the Activate brand agency, who launched the popular Bunny Barometer, a competition to find the best bunny among selected businesses, back in 2004.
Naidoo was a judge at the competition and Chappe was determined to call him in again to mark the start of an even bigger project, destined to go global.
"For five years, I've been thinking of starting a website to help locals and tourists find the best bunny chows in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal," he said.
"There are about 500 businesses selling bunnies, some less reputable than others."
Now the public is being asked to give an honest review, to rate or slate the bunnies they have downed, as a guide to others.
"Bunny chows are an institution in Durban and no one makes them quite like us. They are a great social leveller and you can have a chief executive and a mechanic eating a quarter bunny in the same place," said Chappe, who says he has eaten 400 quarter bunnies since discovering them as a student.
"They were cheap and became my staple diet."
Hailing the website as a "wonderful idea", Naidoo said he envisaged thousands of 2010 soccer supporters at the Durban fan parks watching the football on the big screens "with bunny chows in their hands instead of fish and chips and burgers".
It would be an experience they could not get anywhere else, he said.
"No one else can get the flavour and the curry right."
Shama Deonarain, who made Naidoo and Chappe quarter bunnies to celebrate the launch of the website, revealed her secret - they have to be prepared with love.
The website can be found at quarterbunny.co.za.
