Oh to be a large black woman with a superhuman voice
July 20, 2009

By Zane Henry

Talk about no rest for the wicked. Fresh off the plane from 10 Days of Amazing at the National Arts Festival, I walk straight into two floods.

First, a literal one that made my car smell of mouldy dog, then a flood of kick-ass Cape Town theatre.

Thank goodness my theatre-going stamina was buffed up by the 4-shows-a-day average in Grahamstown.

First there was the Blues Brothers Musical at the Newspace. Fun, lightweight and merely an entree for the heftier main course. The Mechanicals are back and better than ever. Their British Lines Tour features plays but Harold Pinter, Oscar Wilde and Sarah Kane. Sheer joy.

Then there was the always fun 3 Tons of Fun at On Broadway. Those ladies are so awesome that they made me wish that I was a large black woman with superhuman vocals chords.

And yet, that's not all that's on offer in Cape Town. I'm dying to see Noah of Cape Town at the Baxter, which has been getting rave reviews. So many shows, so little time. Still, it's great being so spoilt for choice.

I also finally saw the latest Harry Potter film, having missed the screening while I was in Grahamstown. I was apprehensive, being a big fan of the books and being regularly disappointed by the films, but I was pleasantly surprised. The kids were grown into decent actors, the plot was coherent and Michael Gambon's Dumbledore wasn't as annoying. Great fun.

On Sunday, the news broke that Lara Foot Newton has been appointed the new Director of the Baxter Theatre once Mannie Manim steps down. Mannie is a great guy and has been responsible for bringing some amazing shows to the Baxter but Lara is bound to bring fresh energy and dynamic ideas. I'm very excited.

On a final note, I would just like to thank the kindly lady at the Waterfront who offered a cream-cheese bagel to me. Turns out she read my column on Kim Kardashian and thought I was really hungry. Naturally, I took the bagel. It was delicious.
