Hip hop hooray for face-off stars

The most striking feature of the inaugural Sprite hip hop battle, Da Cape vs Da Rest, is the huge chasm between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Cape Town is about building and empowering a community through the culture of hip hop, whereas Joburg's all about the bling.
The final was held on Saturday in the Mother City, after preliminary rounds were held in the two cities to select the finest krumpers, B Boys, beat boxers, MCs, graffiti artists and DJs.
These categories represent the six parts of hip hop.
Da Cape was led by Ready D, while the Da Rest was led by prima donna T'bo Touch.
The Joburg shows were hosted at Bassline, and Atmosphere hosted for Cape Town. Hosts were Black Moss and Ewok, who did a sterling job. DJ Switch was on the decks.
Judges included POC and BVK dancers, Ramone and Wouks.
Of course, Da Cape took the B Boying prize with an excellent dance by Jed. The Johnny-come-latelys of hip hop, Jozi, won the newbie category - krumping. This is apt, as Joburg's rap scene is more about posturing than anything else, just like the krumping.
MCing was won by the Afrikaans rapper Sammy Sparks, from Da Cape. In the beat boxing, Morgan (Da Rest) beat Drumkit. It is one of the most challenging and technical categories, having gone from just doof, dah, doof dah to complicated beats and alien sounds.
The graffiti, which took place on canvases outside the club, was of a high standard and was won by Rasty (Da Rest). DJ'ing was won by Codax (Da Cape).
The event showcased just what a technical and artistic culture hip hop has become. It is a lifestyle that reflects individuality, beauty and art from people who are committed 100 percent to the cause.
