Comedy classics back on the box
November 16, 2009

By Munyaradzi Vomo

There was a time when Michael Jordan was an icon and OJ Simpson was pleading innocence. Tupac and Biggie were alive and Martin Lawrence's gags were hilarious.

It is in this era that comedy legend Mark Curry broke on to the small screen with Hanging With Mr Cooper.

Curry starred as a basketball player whose injuries forced him to quit the game and take on a job as a substitute teacher and a gym instructor. Goodness knows what's happened to Curry now, but fans know he was the best in his time.

Joined by Holly Robinson-Peete, Omar Gooding and Raven Symone, Curry exhibited in the show the wit most of his comedic peers lacked.

He not only served up the funny lines, but was a fashion statement, with his bright-coloured jackets.

If you are nostalgic at this point, relive those days by catching the show on Sony Entertainment Television, from Monday to Friday from 5.45pm. The shows come as a back-to-back double-bill.

As if that is not enough, LL Cool J's In The House airs on Mondays at 6.30pm. For those familiar with the rapper's acting skills, they'd agree that while he may not win an Oscar, he is a decent enough actor.

In this comedy series he plays Marion Hill, an ex-professional football player, who rents out his house to single mom Jackie (Debbie Allen) and her two kids.

Meant for all ages, the show was upgraded for adults only as the content became too graphic.

  • Catch the first and second seasons of both comedies on SET.
