Heroes: The story so far

Growing up, I was an avid reader of comics, which included anything from the action Marvel greats to "lighter" Archie comics.
It wasn't the coolest thing to be found doing, as my peers found it either "childish" or "geeky" - and don't even get me started on the girls' perceptions.
It would be interesting to hear their views on how these "childish" books have been successfully adapted for the big-screen, leaving a significant mark in box-office earnings (Think 300, the Spiderman trilogy, the X-Men franchise and The Dark Knight.)
To add to the big-screen success, many comic book storylines have made it to the small-screen, the most successful being Heroes (pictured). After a seemingly endless hiatus, the popular Tim Kring series returns to SABC3 this week, with a fresh third season.
For those readers not familiar with Heroes, here's a recap:
In season one, entitled Genesis, things started slowly as a group of ordinary people realised they had impressive supernatural powers. They all tried to find meaning in their own way, but unbeknown to them, there were two individuals who knew about their existence.
The first was Mohinder Suresh, (Sendhil Ramamurthy), who learnt about the mutants through his late father's extensive research. He tried to group them and study their biological make-up. Unfortunately, Noah Bennet, an agent of the secret organisation The Company sought to group all the existing members and have control over them - perhaps the way X-men's Magneto controls the baddies.
The season ended with the super-powered individuals knowing of The Company's evil plans.
In season, two we caught up The Company doing tests on the Shanti virus, a serious disease that attacks one's nervous system and prohibits gifted people from using their super-powers.
In the worst case, an individual infected with this virus could die and Mohinder's sister, Shanti, is the first known victim, hence the virus's name. If The Company gained control of this virus, it would mean total control over who lives and who dies. Naturally, the heroes went after The Company to halt its experiments and a possible release of the virus.
Which brings us to season three, where so many questions are, hopefully, going to be answered.
We had so many deaths in the other seasons, including Alejandro Herrera, DL Hawkins and Kaito Nakamura. While Bennet may be the man we all would love to hate, it is Sylar whom we should be worried about the most, as his body count rises by the episode.
The comic book style of story- telling, with many twists and turns in each episode, makes this storyline even more intriguing.
Fans will be happy to know that SABC3 will show not only one or two, but three episodes per week, starting on Wednesday. The show will be aired every Monday to Wednesday at 9pm.
So much for comics being just for geeks, right?
