HOT SPOTS
director/choreographer: Bryan Mynhardt
VENUE: Cheyenne Saloon, Carousel
WHEN: Fridays and Saturdays until November 28
RATING: ****
Reminiscing the sad death of the Sun City Extravaganza, this show comes as the mini-me of those showstoppers. It has pace, variety, performance and pizzazz. It is a high-energy, full- throttle, hard-core dance show.
Choreographer/director Bryan Mynhardt did a commendable job, conjuring a conceptually strong production and anchoring it with good, solid choreography, while getting top performances from his dancers.
Dancers Vaughn Harris, Tebogo Khumalo, Cameron Banks, Sam Kotze, Viveca Olivato, Alcione Goncalves, Lisa Colquhoun, Monique Bouwer and Mynhardt are well-matched and well-trained dancers, who, without fail, impress with their physical prowess as well as their sense of performance.
Hot spots are where the in-crowds meet: in nightclubs. You are taken from the sultry jazz and blues clubs to the swing clubs of the '40s, Studio 54, shebeens and even a Sokkie club.
This journey allows for hit upon hit musically. Craig Urbani and Candy Mosoma are outstanding. Mosoma's solos are highlights, while Urbani's comic touch makes for many a hilarious moment. Another highlight is the aerial speciality act by Mynhardt and Kotze.
Most casino cabaret shows act as a bonus for the casino frequenter. Hot Spots is different. It is well worth the trip to the Carousel.
