Letterman, love and laughter
November 19, 2009

By Latoya Newman

The women are dominating the small screen from tonight - appearing on hit talk shows, starring in girl power-type movies and unravelling murder mysteries.

Celebrity talk show host Dave Letterman will have his hands full this week, as a bevy of beauties flocks to his hit late-night THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVE LETTERMAN, which airs on Sony Entertainment Television (SET).

First in line, at 11.15 tonight, is actress Amanda Peet (Something's Gotta Give, Syriana), who discusses the apocalyptic thriller 2012, in which she co-stars alongside John Cusack, Danny Glover and Thandie Newton.

In studio The Cribs performs numbers from its album, Ignore the Ignorant.

Then tomorrow, songbird and actress Mariah Carey chats to Letterman about her role in the feature film Precious, and performs songs from her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.

During the show, comedian Kumail Nanjiani gives the studio audience a taste of his stand-up routine.

Looking ahead to Monday, Sharon Stone takes the hot seat, followed by Penélope Cruz on Tuesday.

But back to tonight, when another singer-turned-actress is set to impress with her performance in ENOUGH, e.tv's 8pm "chick flick". Jennifer Lopez stars as Slim, an abused women who, terrified for her daughter, tries to escape an abusive marriage.

She changes her name, her appearance, her very identity and goes into hiding, but her husband Mitch (Billy Campbell) relentlessly pursues her.

No one can help her, not her friends, not even the police, and eventually Slim decides she has had enough of running and fights back.

Also tonight, at 8.55 on SET, Constable Tara Wheaton gets ready to unravel another murder, in episode three of RABBIT FALL.

Harley's girlfriend, Gabriel, is sexually assaulted and found dead in a bear trap. Suspicion immediately falls on Johnny Redden, the reclusive trapper who found her. Deep down, Tara is not convinced this quiet man could commit murder. The case becomes further complicated when she begins a dangerous affair with Harley.

Reminiscent of series such as Twin Peaks, Lost and The X-Files, Rabbit Fall follows Constable Wheaton (Andrea Menard) as she tries to make a new life in the remote north Canadian town of the title. It doesn't take long for her to realise it's a very unusual place. Is there a supernatural force at work or do the local residents just behave strangely?

The women are set to pick, choose and refuse tomorrow, when season five of the hit speed-dating show NEXT gets under way on Animax at 8.10pm.

Have you ever gone out with someone you wished would disappear after five minutes? Then this is the dating show for you. The minute a contestant gets bored, angry or irritated, they can make their date disappear simply by calling "next!" ... and start all over again with someone new.

If they don't like their companion's looks, attitude or sense of humour, they simply say the magic word and move straight on to the "next" date.

It could take twenty seconds or twenty minutes, but be warned - there are only five potential dates lined up and if the first four don't prove to be Prince or Princess Charming, they're stuck with number five, frog or not.

Sadly, some good things come to an end next week when the final episode of PACKED TO THE RAFTERS airs on SET on Tuesday, at 8.30pm.

The final episode sees Julie and Dave Rafter wrestling with the news that Julie is pregnant. Do they want to keep the baby or not?

Meanwhile, Rachel reveals a secret and Ben is still on a mission to win Melissa back, but he fears the worst when her ex-fiance turns up at his door.

Packed to the Rafters stars Rebecca Gibney (Julie), Erik Thomson (Dave), Hugh Sheridan (Ben), Angus McLaren (Nathan), Jessica McNamee (Sammy), Jessica Marais (Rachel) and veteran actor Michael Caton (Ted).
