Bouncing back, Bollywood style
November 23, 2009

By Joginder Tuteja

Salman Khan may not be able to forgive Vivek Oberoi for dating his ex - Aishwarya Rai - but he doesn't have the backing of the Bollywood film fraternity. And Oberoi isn't losing much sleep over Khan's wounded ego.

Then again, when you have the likes of Karan Johar (Kurbaan) and Ram Gopal Varma (Rakta Charita) rooting for you, you can afford to be a tad cocky.

While Oberoi isn't taking Bollywood by storm - his roles have been pretty humdrum after a promising entry with Company, and he never fails to flash a disarming smile to stop his detractors in their track.

When industry gurus got wind that he was sharing the camera with Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, they sighed over the fact that he made yet another career blunder. After all, he can only play second-fiddle alongside such actors.

But Johar strongly disagrees.

"Vivek is a good actor and has proven himself in each of the films he performed in. Forget his earlier films like Company or Saathiya, which everyone talks about. Even in Shoot Out At Lokhandwala, his last big film where he had an author- backed role, he did quite well. He will bounce back for sure with Kurbaan and other roles he is doing. He will be a surprise package in Kurbaan. I want audiences to watch him without expectation and be impressed with what they see."

As things stand, Oberoi has Kumar S Taurani's action thriller Prince - It's Showtime, a film which partly was shot in South Africa, and in Rakta Charitra.

Steering away from talk on Oberoi's personal life, Johar added that such factors can affect ones standing with filmmakers: "This is quite unfair, because once on screen, an actor should be judged by his acting ; not what he does in real life. Yes, I know some parts of his personal life may have clouded people's perception of him, but is that really necessary?"

Given Johar's faith in him, Oberoi is grinning like a Cheshire cat. Johar concluded: "He is ready for a new phase in his career and Kurbaan could well do the trick." - BollywoodHungama.com
