Popular singer-actor Percy Smith, one of the three vocalists among the talented 10-member cast of Rock On Beethoven, the new party show at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway in Umhlanga, talks to us.
What has been the highlight of your year so far?
Performing in the musical, Jimbo, at Durban's Playhouse. The production has to be the best I've done.
What is your favourite Durban restaurant, shop, mall and local leisure activity?
RJ's Midnight Grill, Uzzi, Gateway and catching the music at the Jus' Jazzin' club.
The movie you most enjoyed in the past 12 months? And your favourite film of all time?
I was impressed with Valkyrie. Tom Cruise is just the greatest. My all-time favourite movie is the comedy, The Three Amigos.
The album currently in your CD player? And your most cherished album of all time?
I'm listening to Louis Prima's Greatest Hits (Prima is the Italian version of Louis Armstrong). All-time favourite is The Best Of by Manhattan Transfer.
Favourite kind of meal? And least favourite?
Chinese and Italian.
How do you keep fit?
Performing on stage and surf-fishing.
What three things make South Africa truly great?
The diversity of the people, the sport and the entertainment.
What word or phrase do you most overuse?
"Double Jack and passion fruit."
One thing about yourself that you'd love to change?
My age. I am having so much fun and in 10 years I'll be 50.
How and where did you celebrate your last birthday?
I celebrated in my hometown, Wentworth, on December 9.
Dream holiday? And with whom if it could be a fantasy date?
Mexico, with my three loved ones.
If you could be any kind of animal what would you choose?
A fly... on the wall of Oprah Winfrey's bedroom.
What personalities do you most admire?
Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
Six things you truly love? And six things you detest?
I love money, fishing, beautiful women, partying, music and good clothing. I loathe bad singing, bad shoes, rude people, overly hygienic people, sports-star actors and the recorder.
What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?
Stripping down to tanga underwear on stage and only realising when it was too late. Funny! You had to be there.
Favourite actor, actress, author, singer and TV show?
Morgan Freeman, Drew Barrymore, Harlen Coben, Louis Prima and Afritude on DStv's History Channel.
Three things you have to do before you die?
Form my own band, own a BMW and catch a monster fish.
What are you reading?
Nothing right now, but I recently completed Hamish Kyd's novel, Charlie.
Your three favourite cities?
Cairo (for the biblical history), Cape Town (just so cool) and Zanzibar (the friendliest people in the world).
Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know.
I cry sometimes.
