All aboard with Spud writer
November 26, 2009

  By Billy Suter

He's one of the country's most successful authors. And he is one of Durban's most popular writers and theatre personalities.

He is the amiable and down-to-earth John van der Ruit, star of the hit shows Green Mamba and Black Mamba, and author of the phenomenally popular Spud books.

Good news for his fans is that he is scheduled to be featured in tonight's episode of M-Net's ALL ACCESS, at 7.30pm, chatting to show host Mark Bayly on board the impressive cruise ship MSC Sinfonia, which is operating out of Durban this summer season.

All Access is repeated at 5pm every Friday on M-Net, and can also be seen at 7pm every Sunday on DStv's M-Net Series.

Also lined up for this week's episode is an insert on the new Clint Eastwood movie, Invictus, a look at SA's Rugby World Cup win, teaming Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon as Nelson Mandela and Bok rugby captain Francois Pienaar.

The film covers the life of Mandela, starting with his release from prison, to his inauguration as the country's president, and then into 1995 as Pienaar leads the Springboks to victory.

All Access will feature an interview with South African starlet Marguerite Wheatley, who plays Pienaar's wife in the film.

Also in this week's episode is a look at who made the Hot 100 list of a popular local gossip magazine, and a feature on the launch, in Joburg, of South Africa's first open-air hair salon - a salon experience with a major difference!

"In the studio this week will be FHM editor Hagan Engler. He is joined by the gorgeous Carla van Rensburg as he chats to All Access about FHM's 10th birthday celebrations," says a spokesman for the show.

Sticking with FHM, note that M-Net is scheduled to screen THE FHM CALENDAR SHOOT at 9.30pm on Saturday.

This programme will showcase how selected sultry models prepare for the magazine's 2010 calendar shoot, held in various exotic destinations around the world.

Still with M-Net ... it's worth noting that tonight's premiere film, at 10.45pm, is SCREAM 3, a 2000 hit directed by Wes Craven and starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox Arquette, Patrick Dempsey, Parker Posey and Jenny McCarthy.

More murderous mayhem crops up in this final instalment of the very popular comedy-slasher trilogy.

This time, the setting is Hollywood, where a horror movie is being made based on journalist Gale Weather's best-selling books about real events.

When a killer starts bumping off the cast members in the same order as the script, leaving a picture of student Sidney's dead mother at each scene, the investigating detective calls Sidney out of hiding.

Before long, the whole gang is together, trying to unmask the killer without becoming roadkill themselves.

Finally, looking ahead on SABC3 ... note that the must-see Nigella's Christmas Kitchen is to be aired at 2pm this Saturday and next, with a third episode lined up for the same time on Saturday, December 12.

Lawson, one of Britain's most popular celebrity chefs, is back in her kitchen at a time when most of us are up for a bit of extended kitchen work.

As always, her mantra is that cooking should be fun - if it becomes stressful, then you are not doing it right, she believes.

"This series shows how Nigella enjoys the run-up to Christmas and has her revealing some of her sanity- preserving shortcuts that make even the most routine recipes redolent with Christmas sparkle," says a spokesman.

"On this week's episode, home-made jars of spiced peaches and hand-tied boxes of Lawson's cookies are presented as welcome gifts, but the most comforting aspect of all this work is the sense that Christmas doesn't have to come 'off the shelf'."
