July 3, 2009
By Billy Suter
The landmark 30th Durban International Film Festival will feature more than 200 screenings of some of the world's finest new cinema. It will run from July 23 to August 2 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and a number of other venues.
The event will also offer an extensive programme of free workshops and seminars - at the city centre's Royal Hotel - which are intended to prime a new generation of SA film-makers, says publicist Sharlene Versfeld.
The 2009 festival will include new work by star directors such as Steven Soderbergh (his Che Guevera epic, Che), Ken Loach and Deepa Mehta, among others.
Titles to look forward to will include Palme d'Or winner The Class, a film by Laurent Cantet; Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Three Monkeys; and Anne Fontaine's Coco Before Chanel, starring Audrey Tautou, of Amelie fame.
Also of note is Rachid Bouchareb's London River, set in the aftermath of the terrorist bombings in London, and starring Brenda Blethyn.
Woody Allen's Whatever Works, starring Evan Rachel Wood, closes the festival.
