More Bird Calls For Beginners

by Doug Newman

Struik Nature R89.95

As a nature lover I spend a lot of time in game reserves. Hearing the lions at night is a magical sound and I can identify the fish eagle and a few other birds. However, I must admit that my birding knowledge is limited.

So a while back we played a CD as we drove home, and with the book in hand, we hoped that by the time we got home we would be able to identify many more birds.

I must admit that I did recognise some of the calls; what remains now is just to remember which call belongs to which bird.

But as the title suggests, this book is for beginners - which I am.

The 64-page book has two birds per page with information on each, including a full colour photo and distribution map, as well as information on habitat, feeding habits and the calls they make.

Use the book together with the CD and you are soon able to identify the birds. The index is at the back of the book with names, pages and track numbers.

There is a total of 99 southern African birMore Bird Calls for beginners by Doug Newman, Struik Nature R89.95d calls on the CD and the book is compact and easy to use while driving around or sitting at home.

Newman says using the CD can disturb the birds and it could interfere with breeding and even cause them to leave the area. So use it wisely and make sure you do not chase the birds away.

Newman is also co-founder of www.simplybirding.com and has produced this collection of bird sounds to accompany the highly successful Bird Calls for Beginners. - Dianne Low
